What Are Dental Lasers?

A laser is a highly concentrated beam of light. There are several different types of lasers used in the realm of dentistry. In our studio, we use a diode soft tissue laser. It converts electrical energy into laser light and has many different settings, making it suitable for several purposes. For example, it can be used to remove diseased tissue, enhance our patients’ smiles, and more.

Types of Laser Dental Treatments

The applications for laser dentistry are almost endless. In our studio, we have the training, expertise, and experience required to use our laser to help patients with a range of oral health conditions. We can explain the details of your treatment plan when you are in our office. In the meantime, you can read the following information to get an overview of some of the ways in which we utilize this technology.

Lip & Tongue Tie Treatment

Some people are born with a very short or thick frenum (a piece of connective tissue) in their mouth. It can restrict the movement of certain oral tissues, leading to lip or tongue ties. Fortunately, these issues are fairly easy to address with our laser. We can use it to perform a frenectomy, a quick surgery wherein we loosen a troublesome frenum to free up the mouth’s movements.

Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease can be devastating to a person’s oral health. To help our patients recover from this condition, we may use our laser to remove infected tissue. At the same time, it can kill harmful bacteria and provide your mouth with the opportunity to start healing.

Adjunct to Restorative Procedures

Our dental diode laser may play a role in several different restorative procedures, such as those that involve addressing damaged teeth. It may help us to kill harmful bacteria, make treatment as comfortable as possible, and more.

Gum Recontouring

If you have excess gum tissue or an uneven gumline, we may be able to use our laser to help you achieve a more proportionate smile. It can gently trim specific areas of the gumline, thereby creating a beautiful and healthy frame for your teeth.

  • There is minimal bleeding because a laser can cauterize tissue as it moves.
  • There is almost no risk of infection.
  • Lasers can reduce or eliminate the need for anesthesia and sedation.
  • There is often a reduced need for sutures.
  • We can perform treatment as quickly as possible.
