Before you have the procedure done, though, your local dentist says there are some things you need to do in preparation for the restoration process. Find out more about what the procedure entails and what you can do to prepare for it as you read on.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a surgically inserted titanium post that attaches to your underlying jawbone. Because this material is biocompatible, there is less of a chance of patients having allergic reactions. Furthermore, it results in the existing bone cells fusing with the titanium to form a sturdy base to support the facial structure.

After the implant is placed, there will be a period of healing followed by the attachment of an abutment, which acts as an anchor for the prosthetic to fit on top. This procedure leaves the patient fully restored, but there are some things that need to be done beforehand to ensure the success of the treatment.

How to Prepare for a Dental Implant

Before the procedure starts, this is what should be done:

  • Food Prep – It’s good to have a supply of soft foods on hand like pasta, smoothies and soups. You can freeze them, so you won’t have to worry about cooking after your surgery is done. You’ll need a supply that will last for a few days while your gums go through the first phase of healing.
  • Free Your Schedule – It’s also a good idea to clear your schedule for at least a week after the procedure is done. In doing this, there is a lesser chance of an interruption of the healing process.
  • Fasting – If you’re undergoing sedation medication, for 4 to 12 hours before your surgery, you’ll need to fast. Your dentist’s staff will direct you as to the specific time to start the fast during your pre-surgery instructions.
  • Kick Back and Relax – The more you can relax before the procedure, the better the process can be overall. Thus, you’ll need to remove any nail polish and makeup. Additionally, you’ll want to wear loose-fitting clothes.
  • Schedule a Driver – Finally, you’ll need to schedule a person to drive you home after the procedure and anywhere else that you need to go that day. This is especially important if you’re going to be sedated because the effects of the medication will take several hours to wear off. Thus, it’ll be unsafe for you to operate a motor vehicle.
